A creative reinterpretation of the traditional toki form, carved by Kerry Thompson from dense, deep green tangiwai pounamu. Naturally occurring silver flecks - iron minerals captured during the stone's formation - are scattered throughout, giving the piece depth and character.
The shaping is distinct, it is these little details that set Kerry's work apart. The form rises and falls like two wedges backed against one another, with finer edges at both top and bottom. On the front face, Kerry has carved symmetrical triangular shapes into the surface. The upper triangles are rendered in matte finish against a polished background; the lower triangles are polished against a matte background. This two-tone treatment creates contrast and visual rhythm across the piece.
FLYOVER is tactile, sculptural, and distinctly contemporary. A gorgeous, original work.
A brief video presentation captures the subtle interplay of light and form - viewing it is recommended to fully appreciate the work’s refinement.
A significant carving... a lasting legacy in stone.
Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, 'tears of sorrow'. It is the perfect stone for this marvellous pendant.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful ....and this is a good one!
Traditionally, the toki is worn to provide strength and courage to assist through life's challenges.
We provide FLYOVER on an adjustable black cord.
We include our 'Kia Ora' card explaining the meaning behind the Toki design.
