We love the fanciful aura of this striking large Matau. Kerry has hand crafted BELLA NERA from an exceptional piece of Wyoming Black Jade and has finished it in a satin matte polish.
BELLA NERA showcases Kerry's creative design and his carving mastery. There is no straight line to be found in this piece. It is a complex mix of subtle curves and changing planes that catch and reflect the light. A superb piece of carved art!
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
BELLA NERA is provided with a hand-plaited, adjustable cord in Black and Burgundy. We have added a little Burgundy floret just above the top of the carving to secure the cord in position.
