KOAKOA - be glad, joyful, happy, elated

The Pā Kahawai is a composite trolling lure that was widely used throughout Polynesia to troll for fish. This particular design was specifically made to target the Kahawai - a sea trout common in New Zealand waters. The lure was trailed behind canoes - and was a very successful fishing method.

This taonga is named KOAKOA which means to be happy and elated - to be joyful. The fishhook signifies abundance, nourishment and strength. When worn, the matau, or hook, is believed to provide protection - a safe journey over water.

Andrew has made this piece from a combination of heart Rimu Wood, Bone and Pāua Shell. Traditionally this would be trolled behind a canoe - the flashing colours of the pāua shell attracts the kahawai and a finely pointed barb does the rest. These were very effective fishing lures.

The ocean surrounds New Zealand. On our land, there is a whole lot more water in our freshwater lakes and rivers. Therefore, fishing was very important to Māori. Kai moana (fish and shellfish from the sea) played a very key role in nourishing the people.
