TAU O TE ATE - Heart-strings

Hand carved by Andrew Doughty

A description of the thinking behind the design, in the Artist's words...

This taonga is a double ended Manaia. As such it contains several layers of meaning. A Manaia is the profile of a Tiki. This is symbolic of being half in this world and half in the spirit world. It is therefore known to be a messenger or bearer of messages. As such, they can be likened to heavenly angels. In general terms, they symbolise the spiritual aspects of life. Manaia can be adapted with other symbols and stylized to communicate different aspects, or meanings.

This carving is named Tau o te ate which means heart-strings. At one level, this Manaia is symbolic of union between ourselves and our whānau. Our Soul ties. At another level is shows the ultimate union with the Wairua Tapu. This is shown through the two Manaia heads at each end of the same body. As a result of seeking the deepest truth, great blessings flow from the attainment of this union.

The carving is covered by the all-pervasive life-force, or rivers of living water, which is symbolised by the koru covering the main body giving us the power to fulfil our life purpose. The koru symbol is common in New Zealand and is inspired by the unfurling of the new fern fronds. Meanings associated with this are new growth, new beginnings and awakening.

The eyes are an inlay of Paua shell. Each eye has a natural 'pupil' in the inlay formed by the curve of the shell created through the way it has been sanded.

There are two inlays of Mother of Pearl held within two koru formations. This represents the outflowing of the gifts that come from union.

The five wings of the manaia represent the qualities of submission to love, including a turning to truth, a receiving of grace through repentance, and an offering service and faith. This provides true protection which comes through our spiritual development and cultivating our walk with the Atua of the universe.

A full description of the carving's meaning is provided from the artist.
