A gorgeous coalescence of materials...
Drop Earrings - Pāua with Woolly Mammoth tusk set in sterling silver.
This beautiful set of earrings are made from gorgeous New Zealand pāua shell and ancient Woolly Mammoth Tusk (over 10,000 years old) set in a sterling silver surround.
We had our mammoth material carbon dated to get an accurate measure of its age. The testing was done for us by GNS Science, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute and New Zealand's leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research - so their assessment of this material is as accurate as is possible using radiocarbon dating technology.
The beauty of pāua is its responsiveness to differing light - change the angle a little and different colours reflect from the shell.
New Zealand pāua is the South Pacific variation of the abalone. It grows slowly in the cold waters around New Zealand which produces the robust and very vibrant coloured shell. Pāua has long been used locally to decorate jade and bone carvings, but it also makes very beautiful jewellery when combined with sterling silver.
