Wheku - 'carved face'. The face of an ancestor.
Just arrived, this beautiful hand carved 'wheku' pendant. Crafted in exquisite detail, this is a little work of art - and it looks fantastic worn.
The craftsmanship is of the highest standard - take a look at the video and use the zoom on the photos to appreciate the care that has been taken to create this little masterpiece.
We have used ancient Woolly Mammoth Tusk and local pāua shell to create this piece.
We had our mammoth material carbon dated to get an accurate measure of its age. The testing was done for us by GNS Science, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute and New Zealand's leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research - so their assessment of this material is as accurate as is possible using radiocarbon dating technology.
The Wheku is generally found at the apex of the gable on a Wharenui, the Maori meeting house, and symbolises an important ancestor after whom the house was named.
