KAWE - Persevere
"Perseverance pays off"
Feel the power of our KAWE jade matau — handcarved by New Zealand jade artist and carver, Rueben Tipene.
KAWE is a bold matau carving - large, weighty and striking! An audacious pendant crafted by Reuben Tipene from a dark green (almost black) piece of New Zealand tangiwai pounamu. Rueben has decorated the front face with a flowing koru design that reminds of the kowhaiwhai pattern seen carved into poles and lintels in meeting houses. A tribute to the ancestry of the people who came before us.
The design provides a couple of options to wear - the decorative design draws the eye to the pattern - worn reversed, the matau form prevails. Either way, KAWE presents a bold silhouette and captivating visual statement.
Hand carved from New Zealand Tangiwai KAWE is an exquisite piece of art.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
KAWE is provided with a fixed length black cord and Jade toggle.
If you would like an adjustable cord, or a different coloured cord with the loop and toggle - please let us know in the comments section at checkout.
Take a look at the video we have made of this piece slowly revolving - you will appreciate the artistry and the gorgeous engraving in the front face
Also included, our 'Kia ora' card, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
