ARAHURA ROIMATA - hand carved in Kokopu Pounamu
This piece really embodies everything that we like about Josey's work - she selects exceptional stone and uses it to create timeless jewellery. This is a piece we would expect to see remain in a family, gathering familial history.
Here, Josey has used a piece of stone locally called Kokopu - named after a native fish that is becoming increasingly rare in New Zealand inland streams. The soft speckled appearance of the jade is a little like the colour of this little fish, and is quite rare. If you hold this pendant up to the light, tiny speckled, dark inclusions are visible in the pale green stone.
We don't often have jewellery made from this lovely and rare stone, and certainly not in this particularly striking colour - a slightly mottled and semi-translucent green. ARAHURA ROIMATA is an absolute stunner!
Josey has finished this piece with a very fine polish. It has given the stone a soft and silky smooth feel, and the carving is fine enough to let the light shine through when it is backlit. She has finished it with a fine sterling silver fitting and chain.
Josey has taken a traditional carving art form and added her artistic flair and considerable skill to produce what we think is an outstanding piece of jewellery. She finds beautiful New Zealand pounamu and makes little pieces of art to wear that are dazzling and unique. ARAHURA ROIMATA is certainly a piece that looks fantastic on and will stand the test of time.
