BEST FOOT FORWARD
This is a very cool, smaller-sized toki, hand carved from whale bone. this particular piece came from a rib bone and shows the characteristic granular look that we love in this material. It's structured, a little gnarly and a great little tribute to these mighty ocean mammals.
The bone is polished to a soft shine on the front - the back exhibits the highly textured structure typical of bone from the rib. We have bound this piece with a two-coloured cord - Pohutukawa Red and Khaki, and have used the red to bind the head of the toki. Strong colours for a tough little toki! The cord is length adjustable.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
