"once you have caught what you desire, hold on to it" - Rueben Tipene
A wonderful, traditional matau pendant carved in a relatively rare piece of New Zealand Pounamu. The style is one that we don't often see carved these days - it is an old design that I have seen in very old pieces discovered and recovered from Māori settlement sites. Rueben has finished the stone in a very soft, satin polish. Very appropriate for this piece - I think it is as close a finish to the way these would have been worked and polished in the very distant past.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
A little about this design...
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
HOPU is provided with a fixed length black cord and Jade toggle.
If you would like an adjustable cord, or a different coloured cord with the loop and toggle - please let us know in the comments section at checkout.
