The Huia Bird is an extinct songbird once found in New Zealand's bush. Renowned for its beauty and wonderful song, Māori regarded the Huia as tapu - sacred - and only people of high status were allowed to wear its feathers or skin. Sadly, these birds no longer grace our forests, but from time to time a carver remembers them, and pays tribute through their art.
Sami has created a remarkable piece of carved art with HUIA CHATTER. This carving is the slender, curved form of a female bird. It is perfectly carved and closely replicates the real thing - look closely at the beautiful honey-coloured grain and the detail at the tip of the beak!
Sami has added a sterling silver bale so you can wear it with your own chain if you choose.

The material used for this carving is Alaskan Woolly Mammoth Tusk.
We had our mammoth material carbon dated to get an accurate measure of its age. The testing was done for us by GNS Science, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute and New Zealand's leading provider of Earth, geoscience and isotope research - so their assessment of this material is as accurate as is possible using radiocarbon dating technology.
