KIA MAU - Firm Hold
A wonderful, traditional matau pendant carved in a relatively rare piece of New Zealand Jade - Hāpopo pounamu. A beautifully designed, and carved piece by Rueben Tipene.
Rueben has finished the stone in a soft, satin polish. Very appropriate for this pendant because it is a close finish to the way these would have been worked and polished in the very distant past.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
