A contemporary Whaletail pendant, carved in deer antler. Artist - Anthony Bray-Heta.
Wear it, gift it - over to you, but one thing we're sure of - you will love this contemporary necklace. The perfect pendant for those travelling, particularly over water. Whales hold a special place in the hearts of us down here in the South Pacific, and they make great partners in adventure!
Carved by Anthony Bray-Heta, a New Zealand artist and carver working out of his Australian studio - he is an exceptionally talented designer and craftsman who learnt his carving with renowned Master Bone carver - Alan Nopera. He is also a skilled jeweller and combines these talents to produce interesting and eclectic pieces that are a joy to handle and wear.
The WHALE TAIL has quite some significance in Polynesian cultures. Here in New Zealand they are believed to be descendants of Tangaroa - the God of the Oceans. They are regarded as sacred and supernatural beings and are believed to provide guidance and protection.
The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’. The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
OCEAN LOVE is a wonderful piece to show our deep respect for this wonderful king of the seas.
Legend has it that the whale protected Māori journeying in their waka (canoes) which is why these symbols are often gifted to people undertaking journeys, or perhaps starting a new chapter in their lives.
Bound with an adjustable Brown cord. Check out the little bone bead the cords run through - a clever way to manage the cord's length!
Hand carved by Anthony Bray-Heta
Also included, one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Koru design.
