This piece is named PATU KOTIATE - MATĀ KAI KUTU O AHO - Warrior of radiant light.
Artist's note...
A patu is traditionally a weapon although it is also used in ceremony.
MATĀ KAI KUTU O AHO is a medium sized and wonderfully carved patu pendant. In this context it represents strong protection, courage, status and having mana.
There are many variants, or types of patu. This specific style is call Kotiate. The Kotiate is a prized weapon. It is also used by chiefs when giving speeches. It is designed for close quarter fighting and the notches either side were able to catch the opponent's taiaha or spear and parry them.
Being hand made, no two patu are the same. Each possesses its own unique character. The top or butt of the handle is known as a reke. This contains the carving of a koruru or head of a figurine. In this instance it is symbolic of holding the love and power of the holy divine protector in our hand.
This is a striking piece, carved with a great deal of care and thought. Andrew describes the ethos behind his design in some detail and we will supply this description with the carving.
This Taonga has been registered in Andrew's database and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
A fantastic patu, meaningful, beautifully carved and deserving of a home for generations.
We provide this piece with a note from the artist to the holder of the carving.
