RANGIORA - a beautiful teal green New Zealand Jade Matau necklace, hand carved by Kerry Thompson. A sleek piece, beautifully crafted, this is a piece to wear and hold. Have someone close to you heading out on a global adventure? Gift RANGIORA, it will make the perfect travelling companion.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
A little about this design...
The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’. The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
RANGIORA is provided with a fixed length cord and Black Jade toggle. If you would like an adjustable cord, or a different coloured cord with the loop and toggle - please let us know in the comments section at checkout.
Take a look at the video and you will appreciate the artistry of this beautiful piece.
