This is a beauty, a standout piece, carved from beautiful New Zealand Auhunga Jade.
The jade is a wonderful blend of colours - a mixture of soft and dark greens with wonderful aquamarine patches that stand out beautifully. This piece of stone is quite mysterious - hiding colours and structures that reveal themselves with a closer look - much like what may be lurking on THE VELDT!
We've bound THE VELDT with an Olive Green cord and an Olive binding. The colours complement the mix of colours in the jade perfectly.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The jade used to carve THE VELDT came from the West Coast on New Zealand's South Island. It was created under enormous pressure in the alpine fault and then further shaped and formed in our alpine rivers.
Auhunga jade is a stone that sits somewhere between Inanga and Kawakawa and we don't see too much of it - so it's great to have this piece to offer from Ross.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
In the package we include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
