A bold hei-matau carved in deer antler.

Artist: Anthony Bray-Heta

This matau is a lovely fusion of the matau (hook) and the manaia. It is a wonderfully crafted piece carved in a nice dense piece of antler - with its typical interesting patina. This is a very tough material so you can wear this piece all day, every day!

Anthony is a New Zealand artist and carver working out of his Australian studio - he is an exceptionally talented designer and craftsman who learnt his carving with renowned Master Bone carver - Alan Nopera. He is also a skilled jeweller and combines these talents to produce interesting and eclectic pieces that are a joy to handle and wear.

Bound with an adjustable Kalahari Tan cord. Check out the little dragon head clasp the cords run through - a clever way to manage the cord's length!

Anthony is a new artist for us and we have a small selection of pieces that he has carved for us. Check them out at the links below:

The Matau:  The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.

We provide this with an adjustable cord. Also included, our 'Kia Ora' card, which explains the meaning behind the Hook design.
