YELLOWFIN - curvy, sleek, powerful and spectacular! Like it's namesake, YELLOWFIN has a large presence and an edgy allure! A Matau with Koru heart...
Big, Bold and Beautiful - this is a cool piece that will attract attention for its wonderful design and for the gorgeous jade it's carved from.
A finely-carved Matau (hook) crafted from New Zealand Inanga pounamu. We are very proud to offer carved art, made to be worn. This piece is a great example of handcrafted excellence and will become a part of someone's family history.
Ross is a real craftsman - he takes a great deal of care to carve pieces that suit the stone he is working with. In GARLAND he has incorporated koru spirals in the tail, combining two shapes well-known in the South Pacific - the hook and the koru - giving this piece an interesting symbology:
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’. The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
We will ship this pendant to you with DHL Express Courier on a hand plaited adjustable cord.
We will also include our 'Kia Ora' cards, explaining the meaning behind both the Matau (hook) and Koru design.
