AFTER SUNSET - aquamarine hook, hand carved in New Zealand.
We've name this piece AFTER SUNSET to reflect the incredible evening skylines we see in our part of the world - those gorgeous aquamarine blue and green colours just before the dark of night arrives. Unique and beautiful just like this matau.
This Hei-Matau, or Hook, pendant is carved from a rare New Zealand stone called Aotea - unique for its glorious and distinctive blue colour, pieces carved from this material are uncommon and sought after.
Take a look at the photos and watch the very brief video to get a feel for the form and colour of this pendant. AFTER SUNSET is a one-off piece of jewellery. It is large, bright and bold and if you're comfortable wearing something that is certain to draw attention, and if you love this gorgeous blue - this is the one for you!
Aotea stone is found in one remote location in the South West of New Zealand. It is rarer than Pounamu and is valued for its beauty. It has long been used by Māori for jewellery, trade and to gift. The wonderful blue colour comes from the mineral Kyanite.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
We deliver this pendant on a hand plaited black adjustable cord. We will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Hook design.
