This large Toki has been carved from a beautiful piece of dark, speckled green New Zealand Jade (Pounamu). This is a remarkable piece of stone with deep blue green shadows sprinkled through the jade - this jade has been beautifully carved and polished creating a really striking piece of traditional jewellery!
We have bound this with a Black Cord and an Black/Manuka Green Binding. The cord is The pendant is polished to a low shine which brings the startling beauty of the jade to the fore.
This shape is derived from a chisel tool used by the Māori people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) to carve their great canoes and the detailing on their meeting houses. It was an essential tool in their daily lives, and a good quality jade adze was a prized possession.
