BEST FOOT FORWARD - This is a very cool toki, hand carved from whale bone.

This particular piece came from a jaw bone and shows the characteristic granular look that we love in this material. It's structured, a little gnarly and a great little tribute to these mighty ocean mammals.

We have bound this piece with a plum coloured cord and have used a cobalt blue to bind the head of the toki. Strong colours for a tough little guy! The cord is length adjustable. We've also added a little woolly mammoth tusk decorative ball above the carving.

The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.

The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
