NEW ARRIVAL - ONE ONLY

TUI - named after a cheeky, territorial bird with the song of an angel!

This traditional Māori flute is called a Kōauau. These are carved tubes, made from bone or wood, and open at both ends. They are usually somewhere between 10 and 20cm long (4 - 8 inches) and have between three and six finger holes drilled through the bore.

This piece is beautifully carved and decorated in a traditional design - a perfect display piece, but also a fully functioning musical instrument. Please watch the video to appreciate the craftsmanship  - it has been signed with the Artists' mark.

Māori tradition says that musical instruments are members of families of the Gods. The ancestor of flute music is the Goddess 'Hine Raukatauri' - a child of Rangi the Sky Father, and Papa, the Earth Mother.

This has been carved from bone and stained with a homemade dye that Yuri makes and uses to colour the bone.

Artist: Yuri Terenyi
