BIG RED is a large hand carved matau, or hook pendant. It is a whitish piece with green inclusions throughout the stone.
Why BIG RED? The stone is a very rare nephrite/diopside found only in the Tasman region in the upper South Island in New Zealand. These appear in their natural form with a red outer skin and local rock hound apparently call these beauties - BIG RED.
We have hand plaited a cord in three colours - Khaki, Ice White and Manuka Green to accentuate the colours in the stone. The cord is length adjustable.
Lime green and deep green tones are on full display throughout BIG RED sourced locally in Nelson, New Zealand.
We've hand plaited a khaki/manuka green/ice white adjustable cord with gorgeous floret slipknots for this pendant.
We spoke with the person who discovered this particular piece of stone:
"Big red is a nephrite/diopside mix and a very unique one. I've only seen one in 30 years. We probably won't see another for a long while.....such is the nature of our Nelson stone. The Nelson nephrite/diopside mixes come in an incredible array of colors and textures”.
As an adornment, matau are said to bring prosperity, abundance, good health and power. They are believed to lend authority to the wearer. Matau are worn as a talisman to provide protection and safety when travelling over water.
The fish hook played an important role in the lives of early Polynesian cultures as it provided the means to catch fish - a staple and important part of their diet. A good fish hook was something of real value. These values are still considered inherent in these carved representations.
We will provide one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
