BIG SPIRIT is a little different - a toki with intricate manaia carved into the bottom of the blade.
This is a little masterpiece that exhibits the creativity and carving skill of Yuri Terenyi. It is a very finely carved piece which incorporates two strong and traditional designs, the toki and the manaia. A super interesting piece of jewellery with shapes and patterns which are believed to provide a connection between the spirit and mortal worlds.
A lovely piece of wearable art carved with just the right combination of detail and simplicity.
A symbol of courage and strength in times of adversity, toki were worn by Māori elders as a symbol of power, wisdom and authority.
Traditionally people from the Pacific used the toki to build fortresses and waka - ocean going canoes. It is a symbol of authority and power and the wearer is believed to be a person of good character.
Māori believe that carvings carry the spirit of those who wear them, becoming an important family Taonga (treasure) passed on to future generations of the family as an heirloom.
The manaia is believed to be the holder of great spiritual energy and is a guardian against evil.
