A wonderful pendant carved with graceful, soft curves - one side has traditional etching and the other is beautifully polished to highlight the grain. This is a piece that needs to be worn all the time. We have bound this with a dark brown Wapiti cord with a Pale Honey binding to pick up the colour in the bone.

The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.

Whale bone is granular and quite porous. This gives it the wonderful variation in colour and distinctive flecked appearance. The porous nature of this bone means that it will absorb body oils. When worn against your skin it will take on a golden colour over time.

We deliver this pendant on a hand plaited, adjustable cord and will include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
