This hand carved bone fish hook necklace (hei-matau) is very traditional in style. Beautifully presented with complex herringbone binding. This fish hook necklace is presented on a waxed braided cord with bone toggle.

In New Zealand Maori tradition the fish hook represents prosperity, abundance, strength and determination. A fish hook is also worn to show a respect for the ocean and as an amulet provides protection on a journey, particularly when traveling over water.

Bone and carving is a tribal craft historically performed by the Maori people of New Zealand to produce tools such as the fish hook (matau) as well as a form of adornment and story telling through carved panels on meeting houses.

This bone fish hook necklace is suitable to be worn by men and women.
