Dolphins - friendship and protection

1 In stock

BA4.06

Dolphins are seen as a symbol of friendship, wisdom and protection. This carving of two dolphins is also symbolic of the joining of two people.

The ocean has always been the dominant force for the Maori people who traveled huge distances in their long canoes and lived on the bounty of the tropical waters. They had a great respect for the creatures on the sea and in particular dolphins and whales.

Bone carving is a traditional and often sacred craft practiced by some of the coastal native tribes around the world. Bone carvings by the New Zealand Maori are some of the most beautiful wearable works of art and come in a wide variety of styles from very traditional pieces to the more contemporary or modern styles.

Every Maori bone carving comes with a waxed braid cord with bone toggle detail along with woven native flax presentation case designed to show the traditional styling and beauty of the carving. Also supplied is an attractive information sheet telling of the meaning of the Maori carving and a little about the Maori people.
