TŪRANGAWAEWAE - belonging
This design has a combination of a koro, matau (hook) and a pikorua (twist). The hook gives us good luck and energy. It's believed to bring peace, prosperity and good health. The simplified twist at the top of this piece is about the flow of energy between the spiritual and physical worlds. It signifies the bond that you have with your whānau, or family.
We have named this piece TŪRANGAWAEWAE - it was carved to reflect the strength gained from strong family bonds.
The inner part of the koro is a matt finish, the rest is sanded to a more shiny finish, the twist around the top continues around the back of the piece. The hook and koro are similar on the back apart from the variation in stone.
This pendant is beautifully carved and the jade is exceptional - it has fabulous variation and lovely colouring. If you like flower jade, this is a great example of this stone.
We provide this with a fixed length, Olive Green and Gingernut Brown braided cord. In keeping with the twist on the shaft of the hook we have added a Gingernut floret popper and jade toggle fixture!
A little about the traditional symbolism in these designs:
The twist carving with its crisscross form represents the many paths of life and love and as such is regarded as the original eternity symbol. The single twist carving represents the joining together of two people for eternity. Its shape describes the way relationships shift, sometimes moving apart, but coming together as a couple share their lives.
The Koru: the Māori word for 'loop'. The spiral shaped koru design represents an unfolding silver fern frond. The circular movement towards an inner coil refers to ‘going back to the beginning’. The unfurling frond itself is symbolic of new life, new beginnings, hope and rebirth.
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
The shape is streamlined, gloriously curved and polished to a rich, matte sheen. Take a look at the video and you will appreciate the artistry of this beautiful piece.
