EXPLORE - a beautiful little New Zealand Jade Matau pendant.
A classic piece carved by Master jade carver - Ross Crump. Ross has a unique ability to bring out the very best in the piece of jade he's working with - this is very evident with this piece - beautiful smooth, gentle lines, the tail carved with a little swing so the jade becomes light and translucent.
This is carved from marvellous New Zealand Marsden jade - a beautiful, semi-translucent deep green jade. On the back, where the front edge rounds, you can see a layered piece of flower colour in the stone. There will never be another piece like this - these quirks make every pendant unique.
Check it out on the video we have taken of this piece slowly rotating - it will take you about 20 seconds to see exactly what we have here - a beautiful jade matau pendant.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
We will provide this pendant with a hand-plaited cord which is length adjustable.
We will also include our 'Kia Ora' card explaining the meaning behind the hook design.
