THE NORSEMAN - The front face of this stunning Tangiwai Toki has freckles of pale gold in a sea of green and minty swirls of mist. It is mysterious and alluring - an absolute beauty!
The design is also quite wonderful - a solid piece of tangiwai - large and commanding. The adze arches forward in challenge and the back is cupped through the top third and drops into a gently rounded blade. A gorgeous tactile piece that should be worn.
We have plaited a cord specifically for this piece - Burnt Gold and Olive cords to pick up and promote the colours in the stone. The binding at the head is Burnt Gold - this is a visually strong piece of jewellery.
This toki is a little reflection of the area the stone comes from. One of the most spectacular places in our country, where the bush lines the fjords and the water is a deep green.
A little background on this stone:
Tangiwai is an interesting stone. It is rarer than jade and is found in Anita Bay - one small area in Piopiotahi, The Milford Sounds. If you've ever travelled down to the South Western corner of New Zealand, home to this marvellous stone, you'll appreciate the beauty of this region - and this is a little piece of that magic!
Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, 'tears of sorrow'. It is the perfect stone for a drop-shaped pendant.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We have one only, and this piece will be removed from our site when sold. We will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
