NEW ARRIVAL
GYBE - difficult, sometimes dangerous but, when well executed, beautiful!
This matau pendant was carved for us by Ric Moor. Ric's work is new to NZ Pacific's Jade collection and we're delighted to have his particular style of carving to offer you. He has been carving jade for many years and has passed on his skills to a lot of young carvers - many who have gone on to develop considerable skill in this old art.
The jade is a wonderful pale mint green Inanga pounamu. This is a rare jade loved and valued for its distinctive colour. The cord is a four-plait, adjustable creme coloured necklace, and we've bound the top in a Burgundy Red.
GYBE is a medium sized Hei-Matau, or hook carving. It is carved from a lovely mint teal green piece of rare Inanga jade and is just a lovely medium piece of traditional jade art. Ric is a craftsman and this piece is a great example of his carving talent. He has finished GYBE with a soft polish that glows and is gorgeous to handle. Definitely a pendant to wear all the time.
Watch the brief video we have made of GYBE slowly revolving. It will reveal all the angles and subtle variations in colour, and maybe help you imagine how this piece will make you feel when you slip it over your head.
The Hook - Matau: the wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
