NEW ARRIVAL

Hand carved bone matau pendant - ONE ONLY

A strong pendant with tons of character. The bone is a creamy white on one side, slightly darker and more gnarley on the other. This piece is beautifully carved - large and visually imposing but also sleek and with cool curves - just like the whale the bone came from.

The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.

Whale bone is quite porous and will absorb body oils. It will take on a golden colour over time. Local belief would say that the pendant absorbs the wearer's mana (spirit), and becomes a part of you.

We deliver this pendant on a hand plaited Gingernut coloured cord which is length adjustable. In your package we include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
