CRACKERJACK - this piece is the real deal. A beautifully carved toki pendant made from rare Tangiwai Pounamu.
This toki is a reflection of the area the Tangiwai stone comes from. One of the most spectacular places in our country, where dense, native bush lines the fjords and the water is a deep green.
Carved by Raegan Bregmen, CRACKERJACK is a traditional toki, long and slim and a real tribute to the adze that was so important to Māori in their daily lives. A building tool and a first line of defense, today toki are widely worn as adornments and for their spiritual significance. This is a beautiful piece, carved from a rare and beautiful stone.
A little background on this stone:
Tangiwai is an interesting stone. It is rarer than jade and is found in Anita Bay - one small area in Piopiotahi, The Milford Sounds. If you've ever travelled down to the South Western corner of New Zealand, that is home to this marvellous stone, you'll appreciate the beauty of this region - and this is a little piece of that magic!
Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, 'tears of sorrow'. It is the perfect stone for a drop-shaped pendant.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We have one only, and this piece will be removed from our site when sold. We will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
