Hold this beauty up to the light and let the light shine through.
A glorious Tangiwai Pounamu Contemporary Toki. Symmetrical and light this is a beautifully carved piece that looks and feels very cool.
Tangiwai is an interesting stone. It is rarer than jade and is found in Anita Bay - one small area in Piopiotahi, The Milford Sounds. If you've ever travelled down to the South Western corner of New Zealand, that is home to this marvellous stone, you'll appreciate the beauty of this region - and this is a little piece of that magic!
Tangiwai is the most ancient form of pounamu and takes its name from the Māori 'tangi' - to cry and 'wai' - water, 'tears of sorrow'. It is the perfect stone for a drop-shaped pendant.
The pendant is suspended with a unique Kalahari binding and Olive/Kalahari combo handplaited, adjustable cord.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We have one only, and this piece will be removed from our site when sold. We will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
