Jade Hei Matau / Koru

1 In stock

A contemporary tribal Maori Fish Hook (Hei Matau) / Koru design.

The fish hook is a traditional Maori design symbolising strength, courage, determination, prosperity and abundance. The fish hook also acts as a good luck amulet or talisman and protector of those traveling, especially over water and is often worn by travelers on their journey.

The koru is symbolic of a new fern unfurling, representing growth, new life and new beginnings. The koru is also known as a symbol of love, peace and harmony.

In traditional Maori culture, the ownership of a fish hook acknowledged a deep respect for the ocean and brought prosperity. Hei-Matau provide protection, and prosperity is bestowed upon those who give and those who receive the Hei-Matau.

Each piece is individually handcrafted and as jade is a natural material there will be slight variations in colour between each carving. Carvings are beautifully presented in a traditional flax woven pouch with traditional tribal meaning included.

A suitable necklace for a man or woman.
