A gorgeous jade matau carved by New Zealander Luke Gardiner.
This is a beautifully proportioned carving and is a real tribute to the matau which is such an important symbol in local māori culture.
The fish hook (matau) was an important tool for Pacific cultures. In Māori legend New Zealand was once a huge fish that was caught by the great mariner Maui using a line of woven plant fibre and a bone hook. The owner of a good hook was seen as someone able to provide a village with food, so they held a position of authority and respect.
Matau are also believed to offer the wearer protection when travelling, particularly over water.
