Contemporary Art - Ancient Materials - Traditional Design
Check out this beautiful, handcarved Kahawai lure. This is a beautiful interpretation of a traditional fish hook used to troll for Kahawai down here in the South Pacific.
Usually these were carved from bone with a pāua shell insert to attract the fish. This piece is carved from a piece of silicate stone with an exposed, polished vein of Opal. The hook is carved from a New Zealand Kahurangi jade which is renowned for is clear, bright green colour.
This is a strong and beautifully carved piece - Alex has worked with the natural beauty of the materials to stunning effect!.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
We will ship this beautiful piece in a woven kete pouch and will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
