This piece is carved from our rare and beautiful New Zealand Pounamu - a gorgeous, small piece of hand carved jewellery.
We've called it KĀNUKA after a strong, tough and very useful tree that grows on the forest fringes throughout New Zealand. We love the tree and we REALLY LOVE this pendant!
KĀNUKA is bound with a Manuka Green, hand-plaited cord. Take a look at the video to see the shape of the pendant and the variable colours in the stone. A perfect little piece of New Zealand, carved by a wonderful local jade artist.
The toki, or adze, is a symbol of strength. The adze was a key survival tool, so the owner of a good one was believed to be strong and powerful. They were used to carve ocean-going waka (sea canoes) and to build central meeting houses so they played a central role in traditional life of māori.
The toki is traditionally worn for strength and courage - to assist through life's challenges.
We have one only, and this piece will be removed from our site when sold. We will also include one of our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Toki design.
