KA'ULAOKEAHI - Origin: Hawaii; Meaning...Redness of the fire, another name for Pele the goddess of fire. Ka'ula - the redness or the flame; okeahi - of the fire. Ahi means fire in Hawaiian.
I was recently chatting with a wonderful woman in Hawaii called Ka'ulaokeahi and she was the inspiration for these pieces.
Hand carved from New Zealand Jade. The beautiful colour results from heating the jade - it changes from the characteristic green to this glorious orange / red.
Early coal miners discovered this when using jade boulders from their tailings to build fireplaces - the heat from the fires changed the stone's colour to a coalescence of orange and red hues. You can best see these in the video.
The toki is a tribal symbol representing strength. It is designed to honour the adze which was used to build, fight, defend and played a important role in the daily survival of ancient tribes.
