The kotiate was a favoured weapon in close combat. Usually made of wood or stone, it was a very dangerous weapon and favoured by māori in battle. The term kotiate translates as 'to cut liver' so you can imagine how this weapon was once used.
Kotiate are still sometimes used in a traditional setting today by māori chiefs when making speeches.
This is a lovely example of these traditional clubs.
