Dolphins have always been held in very high regard by the people of the South Pacific. Legends abound about how they aided in navigating the huge distances Maori covered by canoe, how they protected and defended people travelling over water from shark attacks and their friendly, playful nature towards man.
So, here in New Zealand they are respected and loved as protective guardians and are a symbol of man's bond with other creatures on the earth.
We are not alone in this love of these beautiful mammals - in ancient Greece, the penalty for killing a dolphin was death!
This is a beautiful example which captures the spirit of the dolphin perfectly.
