A beautiful, delicately carved Toki with Manaia handmade by Yuri Terenyi. This is a wonderful piece, very finely carved and incorporating shapes and patterns which its believed depict an interaction, a connection between the spirit and mortal worlds.
This is a lovely bone carving with some exquisite detail and depth to it.
A symbol of courage and strength in times of adversity, toki were worn by Māori elders as a symbol of power, wisdom and authority.
Traditionally people from the Pacific used the toki to build fortresses and waka - ocean going canoes. It is a symbol of authority and power and the wearer is believed to be a person of good character.
Māori believe that carvings carry the spirit of those who wear them, becoming an important family Taonga (treasure) passed on to future generations of the family as an heirloom.
The manaia is believed to be the holder of great spiritual energy and is a guardian against evil.
