E iti noa ana nā te aroha - a small thing given with love
Hand carved by Ross Crump - this is a stunning pendant.
This manaia has been carved from a gorgeous piece of flower jade. The colours in the jade vary beautifully from a deep green in the head and body and with a splash of coppery-gold through the koru heart.
We have named this piece Makomako after our native Bellbird - a beautiful small bird with a beautiful, melodious song.
The body of the manaia is decorated with a koru - softening the detail of the carved head.
This piece looks fantastic from both sides - take a moment to watch the short video to appreciate the form and colour of this piece.
The Manaia: a mythical being believed to be the invisible light, or aura, surrounding a person. They represent spiritual power and are believed to be the guide that leads the spirits to heaven. They are worn to guide and protect.
The Koru: The unfurling frond shape is symbolic of new life, new beginnings and the hope that is associated with a step into something new and unknown. It is a reflection of the spirit of rejuvenation and the personal growth that comes with undertaking new challenges.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
We will provide this pendant with a hand-plaited cord which is length adjustable. Please use the drop-down menu to select the piece that you would like.
We will also include our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Manaia, hook and Koru design.
