The Manaia is an ancient mythical being with a birds head and a human form. It is said to be the messenger between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits. It is believed to be the holder of great spiritual energy and is a guardian against evil.
It can be seen blended into many Maori designs with subtle differences between tribes. In this particular carving it is incorporated into a matau, with elements of the koru.
Bone carving is a traditional and often sacred craft practiced by some of the more warlike native tribes around the world. We believe New Zealand carvers produce some of the most beautiful wearable art works available today. All have a story or spiritual significance behind their design.
Every Maori bone carving comes with a waxed braid cord with bone toggle detail along with woven native flax presentation case designed to show the traditional styling and beauty of the carving. Also supplied is an attractive information sheet telling of the meaning of the Maori carving and a little about the Maori people.
