MATAURANGA - Knowledge
MATAURANGA is a unique pendant, crafted from New Zealand Tangiwai Pounamu. The design is inspired by the shark, characterized by strong and defined carving. This is an exquisite carved work of art!
MATAURANGA is a very strong carving. It is a solid piece lightened by its balance and the koru swirls engraved into the front. Rueben has finished the piece with a satin/matte luster producing a lovely texture which feels great in the hand!
A LITTLE ABOUT THE MATAU...
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
The Hook: The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
MATAURANGA is provided with a hand plaited, adjustable mushroom and snowstorm grey cord.
