Hand carved from a beautiful piece of olive-green, tangiwai pounamu - renowned for its translucency. Tangiwai is the most ancient form of New Zealand pounamu. It comes from a remote area in Fiordland in New Zealand's South Westland.
The name tangiwai comes from the Māori, 'tangi' - to cry, and 'wai' - water. Legend has it that this stone was created when a woman, Waitaiki, was stolen from her husband by a spirit and the tears she cried fell on rocks in a lonely bay in Fiordland - these tears formed tangiwai, the tear water stone.
This large, unique and striking drop pendant has been carved from this ancient stone, in the shape of a bear's claw.
