NGĀKAU PONO - To dream, see in a dream... hand carved for us by Andrew Doughty, in his words below...

This Manaia Hook is named Ngākau Pono which means loyal, faithful, dependable, and sincere.

This style of hook can be traced back to the Māori mythological origins of New Zealand where it is described that the demigod Māui 'fished' up the North Island of New Zealand (which is shaped like a stingray) with the jawbone of his grandmother, Murirangawhenua.

The fishhook signifies abundance, nourishment, and strength. As such it represents peace, prosperity, and good health. A fishhook is also a symbol that symbolises safe journey over water.

This Manaia Hook has an inlay of Pāua for the eyes. The koru running up the neck of this carving represent the arising of our happiness.

The koru symbol is common in New Zealand and is inspired by the unfurling of the new fern fronds. Meanings associated with this are new growth, new beginnings and awakening.

Andrew has paired this lovely manaia with a Dark Brown adjustable cord and Brown popper. He wanted to create a piece of jewellery that will draw the eye and request attention. This piece is perfect for you if you like handcrafted, traditional art to wear, and if you appreciate the finest craftsmanship.

NGĀKAU PONO culminates in a hook shape establishing a connection between the ocean and the land - perfect for a piece that comes from New Zealand, an island nation.

Included in your package is a note of the carving from the artist.

Delivery to you with Express Courier is included in the price.

This pendant will be on a hand plaited adjustable cord.

We will also include our 'Kia Ora' cards, which explains the meaning behind the Manaia, Hook and Koru design.
