NEW ARRIVAL
Hand carved bone matau pendant.
A strong pendant with tons of character. The bone colour is fairly consistent and very tight grained. It is a lovely creamy white colour. This is a beautifully carved piece - it is chunky and strong but has a balanced form that gives it a real presence.
The cord we've used for this piece is either our Kalahari Tan colour or plain Black, and the length is adjustable.
The matau, or hook pendant is revered throughout the South Pacific as a symbol for life, well-being and prosperity. Its significance arises from the key role that fishing has played in sustaining island families and communities. The owner of a good hook was respected and held a place of authority in the community.
Bone is porous and will absorb body oils. It will take on a golden colour over time. Local belief would say that the pendant absorbs the wearer's mana (spirit), and becomes a part of you.
We deliver this pendant on a hand plaited, adjustable cord and will include our 'Kia Ora' card, which explains the meaning behind the hook design.
