We have carved this little piece as a jade representation of the Japanese Jizo figurine. Jizo (Womb of the Earth) are a guardian deity in Japanese culture, particularly for children and for travellers.
Another, more sombre, purpose of these statues is to protect the spirits of children who have passed away. Japanese traditional belief is that children who die before their parents are unable to cross the river into the afterlife. They have lost the protection of their parents and cannot enter the safe haven the afterlife provides. The Jizo becomes their protector - he is shown wearing a long, gown-like robe under which these children hide and find safety. Jizo Bosatsu becomes the childs caretaker in place of their parents.
