NEW ARRIVAL
WHITSUNDAY - this gorgeous hook, or matau, carving arrived at the same time as we received photos of one of the family's fishing trip to the Whitsunday Islands in Northern Australia. The sun was shining, the crocs were lazing on the shore and they were catching fish! It was meant to be - and so WHITSUNDAY was christened!
This matau pendant was carved for us by Ric Moor. Ric's work is new to our collection and we're delighted to have it. He has been carving jade for many years and has passed on his skills to a lot of young carvers - many who have gone on to develop considerable skill in this old art.
WHITSUNDAY is carved with his beautiful craftsmanship - it really is a faultless piece! He has finished it with in a soft polish that glows and is gorgeous to handle. A pendant to wear all the time. Ric tells us that he prefers this finish to the higher polish because, with time and wear, the pendant will adapt and change with the owners lifestyle and become a 'better' piece. Well if this becomes better it will be pretty amazing because it beautiful right as it is!
The jade Ric has used is a lovely, colourful Flower Jade from the Marsden region on the West Coast of our South Island. This area is renowned for the quality of the jade that it produces - this is a great example of that.
Watch the brief video we have made of it slowly revolving. It will reveal all the angles and subtle variations in colour, and maybe help you imagine how this piece will make you feel when you slip it over your head.
The Hook - Matau: the wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life - what a lovely sentiment to gift to someone important to you.
